Not only is it the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife this year – but also today we mark the 200th year of the birth of Florence Nightingale. As we all know this day is to celebrate the amazing work nurses are doing daily around the world. In addition to this I think it is important that we acknowledge that this year is not your average year!
Regardless of the changes over the past 200 years, you can still recognise the ideology that was set into place by the famous “lady with the lamp”. It is sometimes easy to forget that the fundamentals of safety, compassion and evidence were introduced all these years ago – and also amazing to see how we have built on this and how far we have come.
I am sure everyone will agree if Florence were around today to see the legacy she has left behind, she would no doubt feel proud… particularly of the way nursing has evolved from being originally seen as a domestic task that women carry out – to now being a globally-recognised caring and educational profession.
All I have left to say is – can you imagine if Florence witnessed the support and recognition every Thursday evening!?
Stay safe and be kind
