What does it mean to be a Bluestones Medical Marvel?

Being an agency nurse means you’ll rarely be working in one place for a significant period of time. As a result, you’ll regularly be working with new people, you’ll often be the ‘newbie’ and you may sometimes find it difficult to know where you belong.

We strongly believe that the benefits of being an agency nurse far outweigh the negatives, but we’re not oblivious to the fact that it doesn’t come without its challenges. We know, from speaking to our nurses every day, that it can be difficult to find your sense of belonging.

Here at Bluestones Medical, we believe that we have built something different. Something unique that we’re proud of. This is, that everyone involved with Bluestones Medical, from our incredible nurses to our consultants, right through to our cleaner, Brenda, is part of something special. Something that goes beyond a job role. Something that gives them a purpose and the knowledge that, without them, Bluestones Medical wouldn’t be the same.

Everyone who is part of Bluestones Medical is important, recognised, and very much needed. We feel privileged to be in a position that allows us to support the NHS to care for those who are most in need. To help families hold on to loved ones and to ensure that those at the end of their life don’t feel alone. This is our purpose. This is what gives us a sense of belonging.

You can read what two of our brilliant nurses had to say when we asked them to tell us about their experience of being a Bluestones Medical Marvel by clicking THIS LINK.

When you become a Bluestones Medical Marvel, no matter if you’re a Community Psychiatric Nurse, A&E Nurse, or a Scrub Nurse, you become part of our purpose. You also become our priority, meaning we will work tirelessly to find you not only the job role but the pay and the work-life balance that you’ve always wanted.

We want all our Medical Marvels to wake up and feel proud to put on their Bluestones uniform. We also want to hear about your day, whether it was good or bad, we want you to know you can call us anytime and we’ll be there. We want to build strong relationships with you, that goes beyond us just being your employer. We LOVE getting to know you, your hobbies, and your interests, it makes our job so much more enjoyable. But most of all, when you’re wearing your Bluestones Medical uniform, we want you to know that this is where you belong. You belong at Bluestones Medical and are a vital part of the team. When you work with us, we never want you to feel alone and if you do, just know we are only ever a phone call away.

So yes, it may sometimes be difficult to know where you belong when you’re moving from trust to trust and role to role, but when you feel like this, just remember that you are part of the Bluestones Medical community, and this is exactly where you belong.

You call or text your consultant at any time and they will be happy to chat with you. We’re always here and we’ll always have your back.

Bluestones Medical raises £1,572 for local Hospice

On Saturday 14th August, some of the Bluestones Medical climbed Snowdon in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd and raised an AMAZING £1,572!

The weather may have been drizzly, but it didn’t stop the team from climbing to the top in 2 hours and 12 minutes.

As you may know, the Bluestones Medical team voted for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd to be the charity we support over the next year. Our target is to raise £11,000, which is how much it costs to run the Hospice for just 1 day!

Not only did we raise an incredible amount of money for a fantastic cause, but the team had a brilliant day (even if it did mean meeting at the office at 6am)!

Thank you to everyone who wished us well & donated to our JustGiving page. Your support means the world to us!

Why being an agency nurse can equal a better work-life balance

It has been proven that human beings are more likely to feel happy and fulfilled when their job is aligned with their values and priorities.

As a healthcare professional, your values and priorities will probably include things such as spending more time with patients, ensuring you always provide them with the best possible care, and having the opportunity to progress.

However, you will also have personal values and priorities. These could include spending more time with friends and family, giving back to the community, and doing the things you have always wanted to do.

work-life-balance

Working in healthcare can make it particularly difficult to juggle all your values and priorities. Your shift pattern and the demanding situations you face daily can be a tremendous blocker. This can result in feeling burnt out, disappointed and unsatisfied.

At Bluestones Medical, we want all our Medical Marvels to enjoy their job. We want them to have a work-life balance that suits them and be able to fulfill their values and priorities. We allow all our Marvels to find a schedule to suit them and their circumstances whilst earning the pay rates they deserve. This is the beauty of being an agency nurse.

Here are some of the things you can expect as a Bluestones Medical Marvel…

  • The opportunity to generate experience within a new specialism
  • The opportunity to explore what it’s like to work in different trusts
  • A structured progression plan to help you achieve your goals and be the best you can be
  • The ability to choose your own work schedule that fits with your personal values & priorities
  • The opportunity to earn fantastic pay rates, even when working part-time
  • The support from someone who genuinely cares about your needs on both a personal and professional level

After the unprecedented time that all healthcare professionals have had to face in the last 18 months, we’re proud to help our nurses and healthcare workers enjoy their jobs again and remember why they started their career journey. We can do the same for you too.

By becoming a Bluestones Medical Marvel, you will take back control of your work-life balance without impacting your income.

So, if you work in general nursing, theatres, mental health, complex care, or community nursing, let us support you to enjoy your job again whilst enjoying a work-life balance that leaves you feeling fulfilled.

Top tips for Nurses working in hot weather

Temperatures are set to soar over the next few days, and this is something that most people will welcome with open arms. However, as lovely as this might be, it can pose a real threat for both patients and healthcare professionals. With the risk of dehydration and heatstroke, we thought it might be helpful to put together some top tips for healthcare professionals working in the hot weather.

We asked some of the fantastic nurses that work with Bluestones Medical for their top tips for working in hot weather and here is what they had to say…

Stay out of the sun

The temperature tends to be the highest between 11-4, meaning that you are most likely to get heat stroke at this time of the day. Our nurses have advised to stay indoors if you can during this time (preferably in front of a fan!). They also said to drink plenty of water before and after your shifts.

Say no to coffee (as difficult as this may be)

Coffee is known for having a diuretic effect. This can result in extra water loss and then dehydration which can be even more dangerous in the hot weather. On hot days, try to stick to drinking water or squash. You could even try an energy drink if you need a little energy boost.

Cool yourself down

A couple of our nurses mentioned that running your wrists under cold water for 30 seconds each is a great quick fix for when you are feeling a little too warm. As a nurse, you will be washing your hands a lot during a shift. Try this trick at the same time and it should lower the temperature of the blood in your wrists and arms. As a result, this will then recirculate into the rest of your body and help you to cool down.

Plan ahead

Be sure to bring plenty of your favourite soft drinks with you to your shifts and pop them in the fridge. If you make these readily available to you, you are much more likely to stop and enjoy them. You could even keep a big jug of water in the fridge for your colleagues to enjoy too! You are fantastic at caring for others but be sure to care for yourself too!

TAKE YOUR BREAKS

Finally, be sure you are taking your breaks. Being a nurse is exhausting at the best of times, but even more so in the hot weather! Try your best to find somewhere cool and ventilated and sit down with one of those drinks you cleverly remembered to put into the fridge.

Thank you…

Whilst everyone is out enjoying the sunshine, we will not forget about you working in the heat to care for others. We hope that these top tips help make your shift a little easier and please remember to look after yourself too!

Bluestones Medical supports local Hospice

We are delighted to finally be able to announce that we have partnered up with The Hospice of the Good Sheperd and will be raising funds for them over the next year.

As a business, we wanted to do more to support a local charity. Therefore, we asked the entire team to vote for a charity that they would like to support over the next year and The Hospice of the Good Sheperd received the most votes!

About The Hospice of the Good Shepard

The Hospice of the Good Shepherd is a respected provider of palliative care for residents of Chester, Ellesmere Port, Deeside, part of South Wirral, and Western Cheshire.

Early in 1983 two nurses attended a meeting of the Chester Lions and spoke about their work in caring for patients suffering from cancer. When asked where they were based the nurses explained that they had no base but talked about the idea of a local Hospice.

Under the leadership of Noel Rouse, acting Secretary of the Chester Lions, they approached local business leaders and healthcare & community leaders to see if there was sufficient interest in the idea of setting up a local Hospice in Chester. Following a considerable groundswell of support, a community meeting was held on 28th September 1983 in Chester Town Hall where it was agreed to set up a working group and committee. At a subsequent meeting on 15th November 1983, Vivienne Smith was appointed as Chair of the inaugural Hospice Committee.

The Hospice of the Good Shepherd opened on 6th February 1989 and the first patient is welcomed by Matron Mrs. Ann Teaney and staff. The Hospice was officially opened by HRH Diana, Princess of Wales, escorted by the Duchess of Westminster, our Patron, and watched by many supporters, staff, and volunteers.

A pillar of the community

Today, their specialist team of medical and nursing staff deliver end-of-life care to their patients and support their families, carers, and friends. The services offered by the Hospice are varied across several disciplines and reflect the diverse nature of their care and support. For example, during the past year, the Hospice has provided almost 300 In-patient stays and had over 1,000 Day Therapy attendances. There were also over 800 medical consultations in Hospice Out-Patients. The Hospice offers social, psychological, and spiritual support from their social workers and spiritual care team. Together with the support offered by their bereavement team, almost 1,000 families benefited from these services.

Our mission

Did you know it costs £11,000 PER DAY to run the Hospice? Did you also know that only around one-quarter of the running costs come from the government? But importantly, services for individuals are always provided entirely free of charge. Therefore, The Hospice of the Good Shepherd must generate about 75% of its running costs through donations and other fundraising.

As a team, we have committed to raising £11,000 for the Hospice over the next year to pay to run the Hospice for a day.

We are extremely committed to working together as a team to raise as much as we can for the Hospice. We will ensure that we let everyone know of any initiatives that we run, and we would be extremely grateful for any money you can donate to this incredible cause.

When it hit home

Last week, we were lucky enough to have been paid a visit by Justin Caroe and Nicola Suggitt who are part of the fundraising team at the Hospice. They spoke about some of the fantastic work that the hospice does, from the formidable patient care they provide to the support they offer to bereaved family and friends. The stories they told really hit home and made the team even more determined to do whatever we can to raise as much money as possible for them.

We would love your support!

Please do keep your eye out on our social platforms to keep up to date with our fundraising initiatives. We know times have been tough for so many people, but just £1 can help us on our way to hitting our £11,000 target.

You can donate to our JustGiving page HERE.

Natasha Davies gets promoted!

congratulations tash

HUGE congratulations to our wonderful Natasha Davies who has been promoted to senior consultant.

Tash works extremely hard and is very much loved by the Bluestones Medical team, as well as our amazing nurses and healthcare workers.

Each week, we ask the team to vote for their ‘Medical Marvel’ of the week. This is a fellow team member that they feel has gone above and beyond and achieved great things.

Here is what one member of the team had to say about Tash; “You can tell that Natasha genuinely cares about the success of not just herself, but the whole business too. She is always willing to do what she can to help the wider team – thanks for everything you (and the whole fulfilment team) do!”

We’re all so proud of our Tash! Well done.
